You’ve got the qualifications and the experience. You have real passion for your work in healthcare. Now you need to make sure this all comes together and gets you noticed in your next job application. Whether you’re progressing your career, just starting out or looking for agency shifts – here are a few of our favourite quick-wins to boost your employability and help you succeed...

Win With Your CV

Start with a summary – include a short introductory summary or personal profile that includes an overview of your experience, skills, and career goals. This helps recruiters quickly assess if you are suitable for the role being offered.

Tailor it to fit – Your CV should never be a ‘one size fits all’ document. Instead, you need to carefully study the skills, experiences and qualities listed in the job description and customise your CV to fit them. You can do this by highlighting relevant experience and clinical skills that they are looking for.

Focus on Relevant Experiences – Highlight key points like specialised training you have completed, internships, clinical rotations and any volunteer work you have done. Don’t be afraid to share your successes and strengths. employers want to see the positive impact you’ve made in your work.

Remember your soft skills – As well as your technical or clinical skills, make sure you detail your inter-personal ones (soft skills) too. These include communication, customer service, problem-solving, time management, leadership, teamwork.

Avoid gaps - that may appear in your work history or education. Be sure to explain work periods clearly and positively and why there may appear to be a gap e.g. you returned to full-time study.

Keep it Short – A shorter and concise CV is more likely to hold the attention of a recruiter, so aim for two pages. Break down information into bullet points, use headers and clear language, and make sure it is consistent in font, size and spacing. And be sure to proof-read for errors.

Your Interview Preparation

Prepare Your ‘Why’ – Do your research on your prospective employer and understand the company or service’s mission and values. Then get to grips with unpacking the role and job description. Practice explaining why you feel you are suitable for the job and demonstrate your passion for working in healthcare.

Practice – Rehearse answering common interview questions like ‘Tell us about yourself,’ ‘Why do you want this job?’ and ‘What are your strengths and weaknesses?’ It’s also important to practice scenario-based questions that focus on particular circumstances. For example, ‘how do you deal with conflict with a team member?’ or ‘how would you care for a particularly anxious patient?’

Prepare Examples – Wherever possible, rehearse some personal stories that demonstrate your ability and suitability for the job. Saying you can work independently will never be as strong as giving a real-world example of a situation in which you successfully applied your own initiative.

Boost Your Confidence – Practice how to use your speaking voice and body language to present as confident and interested
