Life as a doctor is exceptionally rewarding, with excellent opportunities to consider as good doctors are always in demand. However, it’s a high-pressure role, with additional stress to manage with requirements to relocate for work, let alone uproot your entire family. As specialists in recruiting doctorsTTM Healthcare Solutions (TTM) offer unrivalled support. We have helped hundreds of doctors progress their careers. We work in a consultative way to understand your career and life goals, to find roles in the right hospital and location for you and your family. Our expert team will guide you through the visa and work permit systems, help secure the best contract terms, and assist in finding accommodation.

Recent changes have been made to the visa system for non-EU doctors to make Ireland even more attractive, as they will guarantee a straightforward path to Stamp 4, the category which allows an individual to work or study without conditions. Stamp 4 extends the same rights to the applicant’s spouse.

So why Ireland?

An island nation of five million in the European Union, Ireland has a young, well-educated population, with beautiful coasts and countryside, and a friendly, welcoming society featuring a rich literary tradition, strong sense of community and an enthusiastic sports scene. It really is a very nice place to live and work.

The recent changes to the immigration stamp system makes it more appealing for doctors. A new category called Stamp 1H has been introduced for doctors working in the HSE and HSE-funded hospitals. Doctors who complete two years’ service with Stamp 1H will then become eligible for a Stamp 4 support letter from the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment. A Stamp 4 offers the right to work without preconditions. Spouses of 1H holders can apply for another category, Stamp 1G, which allows unlimited work rights. This is a major change, as spouses previously were not permitted to work at all.

Any non-European Economic Area doctor who has worked in Ireland for at least two years will be immediately included in this expansion of Stamp 4. And the change also means that the number of interactions with government departments to secure paperwork has been greatly reduced. Deputy prime minister Leo Varadkar, himself a medical doctor, commented: “For decades, doctors from outside Europe have made an enormous contribution to the Irish health service. Among them was my father, Dr Ashok Varadkar, who came to Ireland in the 1970s.” The minister said he was delighted to announce the changes, which would “make it easier for doctors to get on the pathway to residency and give their spouse an unlimited right to work”.
