As of 31 October 2015, to practice as a Radiographer or Radiation Therapist in Ireland after you must be registered with CORU. CORU is the body responsible for the statutory regulation of the health and social care professions. CORU Registration is designed to protect the public by fostering high standards of professional conduct, education, training and competence among Radiographers.
What happens if I don’t register?
Radiographer’ and ‘Radiation Therapist’ are protected professional titles in the Republic of Ireland. If you work using a protected title without registering, you may be prosecuted.
If convicted, you can be fined up to €5,000; imprisoned for up to six months, or both. As if that wasn’t enough, registration may be a condition of your contract of employment and there could be implications for your professional indemnity insurance.
Who must register with CORU?
1. New entrants
Those commencing their career in Radiography or Radiation Therapy in the Republic of Ireland for the first time.
2. Existing practitioners
An existing practitioner is defined as a person who has been engaged in the practice of Radiography or Radiation Therapy in the Republic of Ireland for the equivalent of two years full time between 31 October 2008 and 31 October 2013.
3. International professionals interested in working in Ireland
Professionals who trained overseas must apply to CORU to have their qualification recognised. Details of that process can be found here.
Registration process:
Online: create a user account on the CORU website and fill out your personal details along with details of your qualifications, career history and professional membership. You can also pay the €100 registration fee online.
Offline: at the end of the online process, you must print out additional forms including an application cover page, Garda vetting form, statutory declaration and, if relevant, proof of professional practice. These must be returned to CORU along with certified copies of any required supporting documents.
Certified Copies: you must submit certified copies of certain documents such as proof of identity and qualifications to CORU. A full list of required documents can be accessed in the Registration Guidance Notes.
To certify a copy you must bring the original and copy of the document in question to a Solicitor, Commissioner for Oaths, Peace Commissioner or Notary Public. To certify that the documents you submit are true copies of the originals, the Solicitor or other nominated person must include their stamp on the copies or their signature along with their full name and address in block capitals. Qualification certificates are an exception- they can be certified by the university or educational institution where you achieved them.
Submitting your documents: your registration application will not be processed until CORU has received all of your supporting documents. All documents must be submitted within 30 days of completing your online application or your case will be deemed closed. If you miss the 30 day deadline, you will have to apply online again and pay your application fee for the second time.
