The Role :


In conjunction with the Person in Charge, the Assistant Director of Nursing will be responsible for the overall management, co-ordination, and supervision of resident care in the nursing home. The care provided for the home residents must be of the highest possible standards and should have a homely welcoming atmosphere where residents feel comfortable and protected.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities :

Play a pivotal role in coordinating and managing activities and resources within the clinical areas. Responsible for induction and appraisals for Nursing staff.
Assist Admin staff in recruitment process for overseas nurses. Arranging practical in house mandatory training for all staff.
Manage resident care to ensure the highest professional standard including resource management, staff nurse rostering and staff development.
Provide clinical leadership and support to all staff through supervision, advice and direct intervention ensuring that staff receive guidance and clinical expertise.
Participate in clinical audit, as per audit schedule in consultation with the Director of Nursing, Care Team Leader and Household Manager.
Be aware of safety procedures / emergency procedures and implement them when required
Maintain a safe environment for residents and staff linking with Household Manager/Maintenance, Care Team Leader, Director of Nursing and Proprietor for the ongoing servicing / maintenance of all equipment.
Assisting Director of Nursing in responsibility for the safe custody and administration of drugs in accordance with the Nursing Home's procedures and current legislation, reporting errors without delay.
Development of nursing policies and procedures with assistance of Director of Nursing. Monitor as appropriate and lead on proactive improvement
Ensure compliance with legal requirements, and the requirements of NMBI
Actively participate in the Management structure by providing cover when required to deputize for the Director of Nursing.
Responsibility for updating Risk Register.Work with Care Team Leader and Nursing Staff to ensure residents are referred for MDT assessments where required in a timely manner.


Human Resource Management :

Participate as required in the recruitment, selection and appointment of nursing and care staff.
Participate in the development and delivery of induction, education, training, and development programmes for nursing staff working in the home.
Be aware of training schedules for staff in clinical areas and ensure staff compliance with ongoing training, education, and professional development.
Liaise with the Director of Nursing to review individual learning and development needs.
Participate in the appraisal of the performance of members of the nursing team.
Deal with staff complaints, discipline, and grievance issues in accordance with the policy of the Nursing Home and report to the Director of


Health and Safety :

Be familiar with the Safety Statement and the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, 2005.
Ensure that the working environment is a safe and hazard-free zone.
Ensure that all clinical equipment is maintained in a safe working order.
Be aware of the policy in relation to fire prevention and the procedure to be followed in the event of fire. Create PEEPs for each resident.
Adhere to the Policy on Moving and Handling. Ensure new members of staff are familiar with this and always carry it out.
