Whether you’ve just qualified as a Nurse in Ireland and are ready to work, or you want to move from overseas to practice Nursing in Ireland – your first and most important step is to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI). So, here’s everything you need to know about NMBI registration and the steps you’ll need to take.

Why Register with the NMBI?

Whether you want to take up a Permanent position as a Nurse or intend pursuing Temporary work as an agency Nurse in Ireland – you will need to register with the NMBI.

The NMBI is the independent, statutory organisation that regulates the Nursing and Midwifery professions in Ireland. The body works with Nurses and Midwives, the public and key stakeholders to promote safety and care for all people using services. Importantly, the NMBI maintains the NMBI Register which is a comprehensive list of all qualified Nurses and Midwives who have met the professional, educational and ethical standards to carry out their work safely and effectively.

As well as being a legal and formal requirement, registration brings many benefits. It confirms that you as a Nurse or Midwife meet the high standards defined by the NMBI – and that you are committed to maintaining these standards through Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Registration gives you access to many support services and resources which are vital to your career growth, and of course your inclusion on the Register helps build public confidence and trust in our country’s healthcare system.

Who Registers?

There are 12 divisions of the NMBI Register, accommodating the following professional titles: Registered General Nurse (RGN), Registered Midwife (RM), Registered Children’s Nurse (RCN), Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN), Registered Nurse Intellectual Disability (RNID), Registered Public Health Nurse (RPHN), Registered Nurse Tutor (RNT), Registered Midwife Tutor (RMT), Registered Nurse Prescriber (RNP), Registered Midwife Prescriber (RMP), Registered Advance Nurse Practitioner (RANP) and Registered Advance Midwife Practitioner (RAMP).

You should note that if you are an undergraduate Nurse or student Midwife you must be on the Candidate Register before working with patients.

How To Register with the NMBI

How you go about registering depends on where you did your Nursing or Midwifery training – within the EU or outside the EU.

If you Qualified in Ireland

If you completed your Nursing or Midwifery training in Ireland, you have already met the registration requirements as set by the NMBI (your study programme is NMBI-approved). All you need do is apply to have your name placed on the Register. You can learn more about the process here www.nmbi.ie/Registration/Qualified-in-Ireland

If you Qualified Outside of Ireland

If you did your training outside of Ireland, your registration is dependent on your meeting these requirements: your Nursing or Midwifery qualifications are recognised by the NMBI, you have a minimum of 12 months’ Registered Nurse/Midwifery experience in the last 5 years and if you are a non-native English speaker you must be able to demonstrate your proficiency in English by completing either an IELTS or OET.

Step 1 - Create Your NMBI Account and Select Your Category

You will need to create your own account on the NMBI online registration portal MyNMBI, and answer questions to determine if you are a G1, G2 or G3 applicant:

G1 (Directive Applicants): For applicants who qualified in the EU who need to undergo an administrative assessment only.

G2 (Directive Applicants): For applicants who qualified in the EU but who require both administrative and qualification assessment.

G3: (Non-Directive Applicants): For applicants not regulated by the EU Eg. Nurses from overseas, who require both administrative and qualification assessments.

Step 2 – Follow the Qualification Recognition Process

Your qualification is compared with Irish education standards and requirements which means you will be asked to upload certain documentation. This includes copies of your degree certificate/s, evidence of your professional experience including references and identification documents such as a valid passport.

Step 3 – Pay and Submit

Pay the Recognition Fee and submit your application ready to be assessed by the NMBI. You will receive an email with their decision.

Step 4 – Follow the Registration Process

One your qualifications have been successfully assessed; you need to log back into your MyNMBI account and answer questions around your competence in the English language. You will be asked to upload evidence in support of this, namely your IELTS or OET Certificate.

Once you have paid your Registration Fee, the NMBI will review your application, and you will be given a provisional registration decision.

Maintaining Your Registration

You will need to renew your Registration each year by updating your personal details and paying the renewal fee. You will also have to complete a set number of CPD hours every year.
