Living in Ireland: opening a bank account

When you arrive in Ireland, you will need to set up a new account with an Irish bank. Most employers transfer salaries into employees’ bank accounts at the end of each month. This means your new employer will ask you for an Irish bank account number in order to pay you.

Below is a list of some of the main banks in Ireland:

  • AIB (Allied Irish Bank)
  • Bank of Ireland
  • Ulster Bank
  • Permanent TSB

You can access more information on opening a current account with each of these banks on the links below:

Different banks apply different charges to current accounts: take this into consideration when choosing your banking provider.

Opening hours

Irish banks are usually open from 10am-4pm, Monday-Friday. Some banks located in larger cities may open on Saturday mornings but all will be closed on Sundays and public holidays.
