Whether you are a newly qualified nurse, returning to practice, or moving to Ireland from abroad, registering with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) is the essential first step before you can begin working as a nurse in Ireland. This guide walks you through everything you need to know about the NMBI registration process, from eligibility to approval.

From 2026, TTM also reimburses the NMBI registration fee for our agency nurses — terms and conditions apply. Speak to our team for details.

What is NMBI?

NMBI, the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland, is the statutory body responsible for regulating nursing and midwifery practice in Ireland. Its role is to protect the public by ensuring that all nurses and midwives practising in Ireland meet the required standards of education, competence, and fitness to practise. Registration with NMBI is a legal requirement, you cannot work as a nurse in Ireland without it.

NMBI maintains the Register of Nurses and Midwives, which is divided into divisions covering general nursing, psychiatric nursing, intellectual disability nursing, children's nursing, and midwifery. You will register in the division that corresponds to your qualification and area of practice.

Who Needs to Register with NMBI?

You need to register with NMBI if you are:

- A newly qualified nurse who has completed your nursing degree in Ireland
- A nurse returning to practice after a period away
- A nurse who qualified outside Ireland and wants to work here

If you are already registered with NMBI and your registration has lapsed, you will need to apply for restoration to the register rather than a new registration.

NMBI Registration: Step by Step

Step 1 — Check your eligibility

Before applying, confirm that your nursing qualification meets NMBI's requirements. If you qualified in Ireland from an NMBI-approved programme, you will automatically meet the education requirements. If you qualified abroad, NMBI will assess your qualifications as part of the application process.

Step 2 — Create an account on the NMBI online portal

All NMBI registration applications are submitted online through the NMBI portal at nmbi.ie. Create an account using your personal details and email address. This is where you will complete your application, upload documents, and track the progress of your registration.

Step 3 — Complete the application form

The online application will ask for your personal details, educational background, employment history, and declaration of fitness to practise. Take your time with this section. Any errors or omissions can delay processing.

Step 4 — Gather your supporting documents

The documents required vary depending on your situation, but typically include:

- Original nursing qualification certificate and transcripts
- Proof of identity (passport or national ID)
- English language proficiency evidence if English is not your first language — IELTS or OET results
- Certificate of current professional status if you are already registered in another country
- Garda vetting or police clearance certificate
- Two character references
- Evidence of recent practice if you have been qualified for more than a year

Step 5 — Pay the registration fee

At the time of publication, the NMBI application fee is €125 for new registrations, with an annual renewal fee of €100 thereafter. Fees are paid online through the portal. Always check nmbi.ie for the most current fee schedule as these are subject to change.

Step 6 — Submit your application

Once your application is complete and your documents are uploaded, submit through the portal. NMBI will review your application and may request additional information if anything is outstanding.

Step 7 — Receive your PIN

On successful approval, NMBI will issue you with a Personal Identification Number (PIN) which confirms your registration. Your name will appear on the public register at nmbi.ie. You are now legally permitted to practise as a nurse in Ireland.

How Long Does NMBI Registration Take?

Processing times vary depending on the volume of applications and whether your application is complete on submission. For nurses who qualified in Ireland from an approved programme, processing can take between four and eight weeks. Applications involving overseas qualifications or additional assessment typically take longer between three and six months in some cases. Submitting a complete application with all required documents from the outset is the single most effective way to avoid delays.

NMBI Registration for Nurses Qualified Abroad

If you qualified as a nurse outside Ireland, NMBI will assess your qualifications to determine whether they are equivalent to Irish nursing education standards.

For nurses who qualified in EU or EEA countries, the process is governed by the EU Directive on the Mutual Recognition of Professional Qualifications. In most cases, qualifications from EU member states are recognised, though NMBI may apply a compensation measure such as an aptitude test or adaptation period if there are significant differences between your training and the Irish standard.

For nurses who qualified outside the EU, NMBI conducts a full qualification assessment. This involves submitting detailed transcripts and programme information for evaluation. If your qualifications are found to be substantially equivalent, registration proceeds. If gaps are identified, NMBI will outline what additional training or assessment is required.

English language proficiency is required for all applicants whose primary language is not English. NMBI accepts IELTS Academic with an overall score of 7.0 or above, or OET with a minimum grade of B in all four components.

Renewing Your NMBI Registration

NMBI registration runs on an annual basis and must be renewed each year to remain valid. Renewal is completed online through the NMBI portal. As part of the renewal process, nurses are required to declare their continuing professional development (CPD) activity for the year, confirming that they have maintained and developed their practice. Failure to renew on time results in lapse of registration, which means you cannot legally practise until it is restored.
